Current and Past Research:
I served as the principle investigator on the Vibrio cholerae genome sequencing project, and am currently the principle investigator on the Shewanella oneidensis (putrefaciens), Dehalococcoides ethenogenes, Desulfovibrio vulgaris, and the T4-related Vibriophage  KVP40 genome sequencing projects.

I received my Ph.D. from Dr. Rita R. Colwell and the Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Science Program at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.  My graduate work primarily looked at the seasonal abundance and zooplankton association of several Vibrio species in the Choptank River, MD ( a tributary of  the Chesapeake Bay).

Scientific Interests:
  • Aquatic Microbiology
  • Marine and Estuarine Ecology
  • Environmental Microbiology

    Vibrio cholerae El Tor N16961
The Vibrio cholerae genome database   This is the first page in the TIGR database for Vibrio cholerae genome project.  From this page you can link to a Gene Identification Table,  DNA molecule information, Search on Gene name, Locus, or Sequence. an RNA gene table, Paralogous gene families, and Download sequences.

The Vibrio cholerae Comprehensive Microbial Resource (CMR) page .  These pages have been designed to allow the user to access data from all of the genome sequences completed to date.  Accessible here is the sequence and annotation of each of the completed genomes as well as associated information on the organism, the structure and composition of their DNA molecules, and many attributes of the protein sequences predicted from the DNA sequence.

Rita R. Colwell  Rita Colwell is one of the foremost authorities on the ecology of Vibrio cholerae.

The Mekalanos Lab   John Mekalanos is one of the foremost authorities on the pathogenisity of Vibrio cholerae.  This page discusses his current research and his publications.

The World Health Organization cholera information page.  This includes Frequently asked Question, Fact Sheets,  Global Data, and Documents.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cholera information pages.  Includes frequently asked questions, Technical Information, and Travelers Information

Shewanella unfinished genome BLAST search  This page allows for searching the Shewanella oneidensis genome, and it has links to request the flatfile of the complete sequence, the date of latest sequence update, and the TIGR policy on early data release.
ATCC page for Shewanella oneidensis ATCC# 700550  The strain being sequenced at TIGR is available at the ATCC.

Other TIGR projects which I was significantly involved:

    Deinococcus radiodurans R1 Genone Project

Owen White was the Principle Investigator on this project.  I was primarily involved in the genome closure stage of this project.  I learned a great deal on the intircities of a genome project while working with Owen on this genome.

Deinococcus radiodurans  This is the first page in the TIGR database for Deinococcus radiodurans genome project.  From this page you can link to a Gene Identification Table,  DNA molecule information, Search on Gene name, Locus, or Sequence. an RNA gene table, Paralogous gene families, and Download sequences.
