SST provides links between source, collection, taxonomy, and molecular sequence data.

- Sources are the voucher specimens, clones, or registered cell lines from
which molecular sequences (DNA, RNA or protein) were obtained.
- Collection site information is available for some sources.
- Taxonomic
information links molecular data with source materials. Alternate
classifications and synonynms can be maintained within SST.
- Links between SST and The Expressed Gene Anatomy Database (EGAD)
provide access to molecular sequences and annotation such as
expression and role information.
SST has been implemented using the Sybase relational database
