Malaria Genome Sequencing Project

Policy on use of preliminary sequence information

The sequencing centers involved in the malaria genome sequencing project have agreed that the preliminary sequence information (shotgun reads as well as assembled contigs) should be released rapidly to ensure that their scientific colleagues have access to information that may assist them in the search for genes and their biological function. Data releases do not constitute scientific publication, but rather provide investigators with information that may "jump-start" biological experimentation. Users of this information are encouraged to share their results with this sequencing facility in order to improve annotation of the sequence data.

Investigators using data from this site should acknowledge the source of information or materials obtained from this site in any publication by including the following sentences in both the Materials and Methods and Acknowledgment sections:

Preliminary sequence data for P. falciparum chromosome 14 was obtained from The Insitute for Genomic Research website (www.tigr.org). Sequencing of chromosome 14 was part of the International Malaria Genome Sequencing Project and was supported by awards from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Given that this information is considered preliminary and may contain inaccuracies, it is expected that no one will publish analyses, based on the preliminary data contained in this Website, of genes on a whole chromosome or genome scale without permission of this sequencing center. This sequencing center plans on publishing the completed and annotated sequence in a peer-reviewed journal.
