As part of this Microbial Observatory project, we are performing an "end sequence"-only general survey of the BAC libraries. This BAC end sequencing allows us to rapidly obtain a single sequence read from both ends of the BAC insert. Even though a phylogenetic marker (i.e. 16S rRNA) does not necessarily anchor the BACs in this BAC end sequence survey, the survey of genes provided by this effort is very useful.
